How Jyotish AI Works

A transparent look at the ancient Indian astrological science powering every reading — the books we follow, the formulas we use, and the people this system was designed for.

Foundation

What is Jyotish — Vedic Astrology

Jyotish (Sanskrit: ज्योतिष) means 'science of light'. It is one of the six Vedangas — auxiliary disciplines of the Vedas — and is the oldest living astrological tradition in the world, with roots going back over 5,000 years.

Sidereal Zodiac

Jyotish uses the sidereal zodiac — positions of planets relative to the fixed stars. Unlike Western astrology's tropical zodiac (which is fixed to the seasons), the Vedic zodiac tracks the actual astronomical sky.

The difference between sidereal and tropical is called Ayanamsha — currently ~24°. We use the Lahiri Ayanamsha, the official standard adopted by the Government of India's Rashtriya Panchang since 1957.

Navagraha — 9 Planets

Jyotish works with 9 celestial bodies (Grahas):

  • Surya (Sun)Soul, authority, father
  • Chandra (Moon)Mind, emotions, mother
  • Mangal (Mars)Energy, courage, brothers
  • Budha (Mercury)Intellect, communication
  • Guru (Jupiter)Wisdom, dharma, fortune
  • Shukra (Venus)Love, beauty, luxury
  • Shani (Saturn)Karma, discipline, delay
  • RahuIllusion, ambition, foreign
  • KetuLiberation, spirituality

12 Rashis & 12 Bhavas

The chart (Kundali) is divided into 12 signs (Rashis) and 12 houses (Bhavas). Each house governs a domain of life:

  • 1stLagnaSelf, body, personality
  • 2ndDhanaWealth, family, speech
  • 4thSukhaHome, mother, happiness
  • 5thPutraChildren, intelligence, past karma
  • 7thKalatraMarriage, partners
  • 10thKarmaCareer, status, action
  • 11thLabhaGains, friends, wishes

Lahiri Ayanamsha — Why We Use It

The Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) Ayanamsha was calculated by N.C. Lahiri and officially adopted by the Indian Government in 1955 for the National Calendar Reform. It aligns the sidereal zodiac so that the star Chitra (Spica) falls exactly at 0° Libra. This is the most widely accepted ayanamsha among Vedic astrologers in India, Nepal, and Sri Lanka. Value as of 2025: approximately 24° 07'.

Kundali Reading

How Horoscopes Are Calculated

A Vedic horoscope (Kundali) is a precise astronomical snapshot of the sky at your moment of birth, interpreted through millennia of classical rules.

Birth Chart (Janma Kundali)

Calculated from your date, exact time, and place of birth. The sky is divided into 12 equal 30° segments. Each planet's sidereal longitude is computed using the Swiss Ephemeris (the same data NASA uses), then corrected by Lahiri Ayanamsha.

The Lagna (Ascendant) — the zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon at birth — is the most critical point. It changes every ~2 hours, which is why birth time accuracy matters.

Vimshottari Dasha System

The Vimshottari Dasha is a 120-year planetary period cycle based on the Moon's Nakshatra at birth. It is the primary timing tool in Jyotish:

Ketu7 yrs
Venus20 yrs
Sun6 yrs
Moon10 yrs
Mars7 yrs
Rahu18 yrs
Jupiter16 yrs
Saturn19 yrs
Mercury17 yrs

Total cycle = 120 years. Your current Dasha reveals which planetary energy dominates your life phase.

Daily Horoscope Methodology

Daily and weekly horoscopes are generated by:

  1. Computing current planetary transits (Gochar) over your natal chart
  2. Identifying key transit aspects — conjunctions, oppositions, trines
  3. Applying classical transit rules from Phala Deepika and BPHS
  4. Our AI synthesises these classical rules into natural language guidance

Nakshatra System

The Moon travels through 27 Nakshatras (lunar mansions) of 13°20' each. Each Nakshatra has a ruling planet, deity, quality (Guna), and nature — which deeply colour personality, health tendencies, and life themes. The AI uses Nakshatra data for:

  • Personality profiling
  • Moon calendar moods & energy
  • Baby name syllable assignment
  • Marriage compatibility (Tara Koot)
Guna Milan

Marriage Compatibility — Ashtakoot System

The Ashtakoot (eight-fold) Guna Milan system assigns up to 36 points across 8 compatibility factors. A score of 18+ is considered acceptable; 24+ is good; 32+ is excellent. Below 18 traditionally requires remedial measures.

Mangal Dosha (Mars Affliction)

If Mars (Mangal) occupies the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th house in the natal chart, it creates Mangal Dosha — considered problematic for marital harmony and the partner's health/longevity.

Our compatibility check identifies this dosha and checks whether both partners have it (which neutralises the effect) or whether remedies are indicated.

Nadi Dosha — Highest Weight

Nadi carries the maximum 8 points and is the most critical Koot. When both partners share the same Nadi (Aadi/Madhya/Antya), it scores 0 — called Nadi Dosha.

Classical texts warn of health issues for children and marital discord with Nadi Dosha. Certain Nakshatra combinations provide exceptions (partial Dosha cancellation).

Namakarana

Baby Names — Nakshatra-Based Naming

The Namakarana (naming ceremony) is one of the 16 Samskaras (sacred rites of passage). The child's name first syllable is chosen from the syllables assigned to their birth Nakshatra — linking their name vibrationally to the Moon's position at birth.

How It Works

  1. Determine birth Nakshatra — the lunar mansion occupied by Moon at birth time
  2. Find the pada (quarter) — each Nakshatra has 4 padas of 3°20' each, giving 108 syllables total (= 27 × 4)
  3. Select the syllable — the pada's seed syllable (beeja akshara) starts the name
  4. Choose a meaningful name — that starts with the syllable and carries auspicious meaning

Example: A child born with Moon in Rohini Nakshatra, Pada 1 gets a name starting with "O" or "Va".

Why the Syllable Matters

In Vedic phonology, each sound vibration (Nada) corresponds to a cosmic frequency. The birth Nakshatra's syllable is believed to carry a resonance aligned with the Nakshatra's ruling deity and planet.

This isn't metaphor — ancient texts like the Vishnu Purana and Dharmasindhu enumerate specific syllables for each pada, and regional almanacs (Panchang) preserve these tables in active use across India today.

Our AI suggests names across Sanskrit, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Bengali, Marathi and other Indian language traditions.
